(Čeština) Step in! Building Inclusive Societies through Active Citizenship

“Step In! Building Inclusive Societies through Active Citizenship“ – this is the title of a new project, funded by the European Commission and coordinated by Prof. Dirk Lange at the Leibniz University of Hanover, Germany. In this project universities, research institutes, NGOs and adult education providers out of seven countries combine their competencies in the field of civic education, integration, and migration. The project consortium consists of organizations and institutions from Czech Republic, Cyprus, Germany, Italy, Scotland, Slovenia, and Sweden. The project’s overall objective is the development of an innovative education strategy to increase political participation and civic engagement of migrants and ethnic minorities, and to promote active citizenship. The consortium will conceptualize seven different education modules, which will be tested and implemented all over Europe. The project accommodates the fact that successful processes of integration demand not only efforts by the minorities, but also further development of the host countries majorities and institutions. In this sense, the target groups of the project are (1.) migrants and members of ethnic minorities, (2.) members of receiving countries, especially stakeholders of parties, NGOs, public authorities, and (3.) adult learning professionals and providers. The international kick-off-meeting took place at the University of Hanover, the 2nd and 3rd of February in 2012. Partner Meetings

The Step In! consortium will meet four times during the period of the project.

First Partner Meeting in February 2012

The first Partner Meeting of the Step In! project took place at the Department for Citizenship Education of Leibniz University Hannover the 2nd and 3rd of February in 2012. The main aim of the meeting was to get to know the other partners, to create a good working atmosphere, and to discuss and define the project’s aims and the best ways and methods to achieve the desired objectives. The overall goal of the Step In! project is to increase political participation and civic engagement of migrants and ethnic minorities and to promote an active citizenship. For this purpose the project aims at developing, testing and disseminating innovative approaches, methods and materials to promote migrants´ active citizenship through adult education. In order to create material which is usable and useful in practice, the first big task for the project consortium will be to conduct a Needs Analysis in all participating countries. This analysis will focus on the needs and desires for a better integration of migrants and people with migrant background in social and civic life. The analysis will include various perspectives: The migrant’s perspectives and needs towards a better integration, the host country’s core institution’s needs to enable such a better integration, adult education provider’s needs to provide education for a better integration, and relevant EU integration policies. Therefore the focus of the first partner meeting lay on the development of useful tools for this empirical study. The questionnaires for the needs analysis were discussed and, in order to get an idea of what might be possible and what was already conducted, a general report on previous related projects and best practice was presented and discussed at the meeting. After the meeting, the group attended a guided city tour in Hannover.
